What We Test & Why

Butler County Stream Team tests the local rivers and streams primarily through chemical testing. Chemical testing provides a very accurate snapshot of the water quality at the time the sample was collected. Chemical monitoring provides specific information about water quality parameters that are important to aquatic life--such as phosphates and pH.

Recently we have began biological monitoring. Though less accurate, will detect changes in water quality and habitat and provides an indication of overall stream health. By combining information from our short-term, accurate chemical tests with the long-term biological, we can get the best picture of stream health in our county.
